"SAR Polarimetry: basics and principles"
This workshop aims to provide a common understanding of the basics of SAR Polarimetry. After a brief introduction of the SAR principles, the basic concepts of SAR Polarimetry including the EM wave, polarization ellipse and Jones and Stokes vectors, will be explained. Due to importance of the Polarimetric descriptors in many remote sensing applications, we, then, talk about the Polarimetric descriptors such as scattering matrix, scattering vectors, and covariance and coherency matrices. Also, the inherent physical and statistical interpretation of the elements of these matrices will be fully described. We, finally, introduce the mathematical basis of the target decomposition methods. Coherent and incoherent decomposition approaches and their applications will be discussed in this part. Time permitting, I will demonstrate some of these analyses in PolSARpro software, which is one of well-known applications in the Polarimetry community.
